SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
OK guys & gals, the following is my take on things to think about in the game of golf, from a "weekend hacker".
I love this game.It is a game you can gamble, while you are taking a healthy walk and using your mind in many ways.
It is a game of golf course management, out smarting the "golf gods" as I say.
I always say "the golf gods are just waiting for you".What I mean by that, is on some of the holes that speak "play the yardage" usually means don't just get out the big stick. But there are some golfers that will, no matter what, get sucked right into that. These are the golfer that live for that "big hit" off the tee, on every tee. That is fine, if that is how you enjoy the game.If you have a little wager going or are part of a team that is in the hunt, as we say. Then on these holes maybe we should go with the 3-wood which will probably be 10-20 yards shorter than the driver, but much straighter typically.Your confidence will follow into that next shot, and so on.
"Adjustment" now there is a word in the game of golf that we all should practice using. Our bodies are not in the same rythmn everyday or week for that matter. Some days we're right on the money with our swing and somedays "not".Chances are, when you are not in that rythmn, your swing speed is way too fast. That is quite a challenge for that day, meaning - slowing that speed down.Reason for the high speed swing, is because that is probably your rythmn for that day. With that said, you as a golfer need a routine that will allow you to switch gears & slow it down.
examples to try:
Actually take two "really fast" practice swings. Then, that is out of your system for that moment, allowing you to then take a much slower smooth swing resulting in a solid & typically longer drive. This applies to your irons also.
Have a different set-up to the ball for a fast swing, if you can't slow it down.It could be as simple as opening up your stance, especially if you are pushing the ball out to the right (for a right hander). This will allow your lower body to get out of your way, resulting in you being able to square up the club to the ball at impact quicker. This one works for me, quite well.
Remember, one of the biggest hitters ever, who plays a draw, plays with a open stance on all his shots. That would be "Big John Daly".
