Whether you're playing catch, swimming in the ocean, running along the shore or simply enjoying their company, the beach can be fun and rewarding for both pets and their owners. The towns and the Cape Hatteras National Seashore each have their own rules pertaining to pets on the beach.
Southern Shores
No dogs allowed on the beach during summer months. Year round leash law.
Kitty Hawk
From September 16 to May 14 of each year, all dogs and other animals on the ocean beaches and sound beaches within the town shall be physically restrained by the owner or handler with a leash no longer than six feet in length. This applies only between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
All waste left on the beach by animals shall be removed from the beach by the owner or handler of the animal.
From May 15 to September 15 of each year, all dogs are prohibited on the beach.
Kill Devil Hills
Dogs are allowed on the beach from September 16 to May 14 only. Dogs aiding handicap people,are allowed year round.
Nags Head
Dogs are allowed on the beach year round as long as they are on a leash no longer than 10 feet long.
Currituck County
Dogs are not allowed to run free in subdivisions. Pets are allowed on Currituck County beaches, but must be under the dog owner's control by leash or voice command.
Cape Hatteras National Seashore
Dogs are allowed on the beach year round, if they are on a leash 6 feet long or less. Call 252-429-3100 for more information on National Seashore regulations.
